Wishlist Member Upsells – Step By Step Guide

Congratulations!

You have made a good decision in purchasing our Wishlist Member Upsells guide.

After going over our guide you will realize that upselling is not as scary as you might have thought.

You are now on your way to generating more revenues from your customers. Click on each of the links in the quick navigation box below to get the content:

What is an Upsell?

An upsell is a sales technique that offers buyers to upgrade the product or service they are buying in order to get the highest revenues from each customer.

Your customers will see your upsells only once, when they register to your membership site, that’s way, your upsells should be One Time Offers so it will increase the chances your customers will buy your products.

Your upsell offer can be a more enhanced version of the product or service or it can be a complement product or service.

Upsells and Wishlist Member

Wishlist Member does not have a built-in shopping cart within the plugin, so you will need to use one of the available shopping carts that integrate with Wishlist Member plugin.

You can find the list inside Wishlist Member plugin >> Integration >> Shopping Cart.

After a member buys a product and is redirected to the registration page there several options you can create your upsell flow.

We built 4 of the most popular flows available and we created 3 to 4 upsells in each flow, but you can change the number of upsells according to your needs.

One Click Upsell & Wishlist Member Integration

The One Click Upsell enables you to create an upsell flow for your customers without having to send your customers to the shopping cart to fill-in their payment details after every upsell.

Wishlist Member does not support 1 Click Upsell as for now; however, you can hire a programmer to build you a script for that purpose.

Upsell #1 Flow

In flow #1 you redirect your members to each of the upsell products, whether or not they click on the Buy Now button to buy the upsell or they click on the No Thanks link.

Upsell Flow Layout #1

You can see the complete flow in the picture below (click on the picture to enlarge it):

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

Since the customer is paying for every product separately, physiologically, he is less aware of the total amount of money he had “spent”.

Now, you don’t need to feel bad about it, since you are truly offering your customers valuable products (or services).
This method is just a way of encouraging them to buy more of what you offer them, and don’t forget that if they wouldn’t have been interested in your products the first place, they wouldn’t have bought them anyway.

Disadvantages

The main problem with this flow is that your customers need to go back and “pull out” their credit card every time they are interested in buying each of your upsells products.

After they buy one upsell product, they go back to the site; there they are offered another upsell product and so on.
This kind of upsell can lower the chances of your members to buy your upsells since the process is too long and tiring.

Wishlist Member Settings

Membership Levels

To create your membership levels you will need to go to Wishlist Member Plugin >> Membership Levels.

Since you are selling your upsells’ products separately, you will need to set up different levels to each of the products:

  1. Original Product Level
  2. Upsell Product #1 Level
  3. Upsell Product #2 Level
  4. Upsell Product #3 Level

You can change the number of products to your needs.

After you add each of the levels you will need to edit their settings that are marked in red as shown in the below screenshot:

Setting-up the Thank You Page

You can create one Thank You page for all products using Wishlist Member private tags.

You will find the private tags when you add a new page or post in the Wishlist Member settings >> Merge Codes as shown in the below screenshot:

The private tags allow you to show only parts of the content to each membership level.

You need to replace the word “level” with your membership site’s levels.

Upsell #2 Flow

In flow #2 your first upsell will be a bundle of a few products, and if your customers will not be interested in the bundle, you will be able to offer them different combinations of the products in lower prices (This tactic is called Downsell).

Upsell Flow Layout #2

You can see the complete flow in the picture below (click on the picture to enlarge it):

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

If you have 2 or 3 products as your upsells then this flow is much faster, it won’t tire your members in a long and complicated buying process and it can increase your revenues conversion rates.

Disadvantages

If you want to offer more than 3 products as upsells then this flow is less suitable for you since it will create too many different product combinations that will make your flow very long and ineffective.

For example:

If you want to offer 4 products as upsells you will need to create 10 combinations:

  1. Product 1 + Product 2 + Product 3 + Product 4
  2. Product 1 + Product 2 + Product 3
  3. Product 1 + Product 3 + Product 4
  4. Product 2 + Product 3 + Product 4
  5. Product 1 + Product 2
  6. Product 1 + Product 3
  7. Product 1 + Product 4
  8. Product 2 + Product 3
  9. Product 2 + Product 4
  10. Product 3 + Product 4

Membership Levels

If you have 3 upsells you will need to create different levels for each of the combinations:

  1. Original Product Level
  2. Upsell #1: Product 1+2+3 Level
  3. Upsell #2: Product 1+2 Level
  4. Upsell #3: Product 1+3 Level
  5. Upsell #4: Product 2+3 Level

You can change the products combinations according to your needs.

After you add each of the levels you will need to edit each of the level’s settings that are marked in red in the below screenshot:

Setting-up the Thank You Page

You can create one Thank You page for all products using Wishlist Member private tags, or you can create a different Thank You page for each of the above combinations.

You will find the private tags when you add a new page or post in the Wishlist Member settings >> Merge Codes as shown in the below screenshot:

The private tags allow you to show only parts of the content to each membership level.

You need to replace the word “level” with your membership site’s levels.

Upsell #3 Flow

In flow #3 you can offer a complete bundle of products in one upsell, so your customers will be able to either buy all the products or not buy them at all.

Upsell Flow Layout #3

You can see the complete flow in the picture below (click on the picture to enlarge it):

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

If you want to offer a bundle of products as an upsell then this flow is the best for you, since your customers will be able to purchase all of your products in one bulk, instead of buying each of them separately.

Disadvantages

Since your customers need to buy all the products in one bulk, they might get scared off because of the price, so eventually they will not buy anything and you will miss your change for an upsell.

For example:

Have you ever gone to a big shopping place (like Walmart) to buy one or two things you needed and picked up a few more things on your way to the cashier?

How many times were you scared off and eventually bought nothing after realizing that instead of spending $20 you are going to end up spending $100?

You didn’t really mean to spend so much, but you started adding more and more things to your shopping cart, and when you sum it up, you realized it is more than you planned to spend.

That is exactly what might happen to your customers, however, if you price your products right and create a strong sales page, you would have better chances of selling your upsells’ bundle.

Membership Levels

In this type of upsell you will only need two levels:

  1. Original Product Level
  2. Upsells Bundle Level

After you add each of the levels to Wishlist Member plugin you will need to edit the settings that are marked in red as shown in the below screenshot:

Upsell #4 Flow

In flow #4 you present the first upsell to your customers. If they are interested and click on the Buy Now button, they will be taken to a second upsell.

Since you know your customers are already interested in your first upsell’s product this is your chance to give them another related service or product.

If they are not interested and click on the No Thanks link, they will be taken to the third upsell; there you can offer them a different product or service instead or give them the same product in a lower price.

Upsell Flow Layout #4

You can see the complete flow in the picture below (click on the picture to enlarge it):

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

The flow is very effective since it is relatively short and it can give you an indication of what your customers want.

For example:

Let’s say your first upsell is an eBook on how to get the perfect abs in 30 days.

If a customer wants to buy your product and clicks on the Buy Now button, after the payment he will be redirected to a second upsell, and because you know he is already interested in your eBook you can offer him to buy the an MP3 version.

However, if the customer does not want to buy the eBook, there are two main reasons for that:

  1. The price is too high for him >> therefore your third upsell can be a reduced version of your eBook in a lower price (this tactic is called “Downsell”).
  2. He is not interested in the eBook >> you can offer a complete different product.

Of course you will need to test every option and see what brings you the best results.

Disadvantages

In order for your customers to agree to both your first and second upsell, they will need to fill-in their payment details 3 times, which can be quite tiring for them.

Membership Levels

Your membership levels should be:

  • Original Product Level
  • Upsell #1: Product 1 Level
  • Upsell #2: Product 2 Level
  • Upsell #3: Product 3 Level

Upsell Flow #5

Flow #5 gives you the ability to present to your customers several upsells and downsells to get the most from every sale.

Upsell Flow Layout #5

Upsell #5 is different than the previous upsells since the customer is redirected to the shopping cart gateway only once, instead of after every product.

When the customer clicks on the buy button to purchase the original product, he is redirected to Upsell#1. If accepts Upsell #1 he is redirected to Upsell #3 and so on.

However, if he declines any of the upsells, the customer is redirected to a downsell offer instead.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

This is a much easier flow for the customers, since they are not redirected after every offer to the shopping cart gateway to pay, but they pay for all the products they decided to buy once.

Disadvantages

Since the process the customer goes through takes time, and he has the option to pay only at the end of the process, it can tire him and make him leave your site without purchasing anything at all.

However, if you redirect your customer to the shopping cart after each product, like in Upsell #2 for example, even if he gets tired after he buys the first upsell, you already got paid for the original product and the first upsell product.

Wishlist Member Settings

Membership Levels

You need to create a level for each of the flow’s combinations:

  1. Original Product
  2. Original Product + Downsell #1
  3. Original Product + Upsell #1
  4. Original Product + Upsell #1 + Downsell #2
  5. Original Product + Upsell #1 + Upsell #2
  6. Original Product + Upsell #1 + Upsell #2 + Downsell #3
  7. Original Product + Upsell #1 + Upsell #2 + Upsell #3

The private tags allow you to show only parts of the content to each membership level.

You need to replace the word “level” with your membership site’s levels.
